How Does Ant Bait Work?

Ant baits are a popular and effective method for controlling ant infestations. Unlike traditional ant sprays, baits exploit the natural foraging behavior of ants to deliver a lethal insecticide directly to the entire colony, including the queen.

The Science Behind Ant Bait

Ant baits contain two key components: an attractive food source (sugars, proteins, etc.) and a slow-acting insecticide. Once you have placed ant bait in the desired location, here's how it works:

  • Worker ants are lured to the bait by the appealing food source.
  • They consume a portion of the insecticide-laced bait.
  • The ants carry the bait back to the nest.
  • They distribute it through trophallaxis (mouth-to-mouth feeding) to other workers, larvae, and the queen.

Do Ant Traps Work?

Yes, ant baits are extremely effective at eliminating ant colonies when used properly. Their targeted mode of action exploits ants' natural behaviors, making baits more effective and environmentally safer than spraying insecticides everywhere.

Different bait formulations like liquids, gels, or granules may be used based on the ant species and their dietary preferences. Some baits use sweet attractants for sugar-feeding ants, while others use proteins or grease for protein/fat-loving ant species.

What if The Ants Are Eating The Bait, But Not Dying?

If you notice ants eating the bait but not immediately dying, don't worry - that's how baits are designed to work. The slow-acting insecticide allows time for the ants to share it throughout the colony before its lethal effects occur. However, if you don't notice any improvement in 1-2 weeks, we recommend calling a pest control professional

How to Make Ant Bait

Making your own ant bait allows you to effectively and inexpensively control ants while being environmentally friendly by using their natural behaviors against them. Here are the ingredients you need:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup borax powder
  • Cotton balls
  • Shallow container or lid to hold the bait

Once you've gathered the ingredients, here are the instructions:

  1. Dissolve the sugar completely in the warm water, stirring until fully combined.
  2. Once the sugar has dissolved, mix in the borax powder until well incorporated. The borax is the active insecticidal ingredient.
  3. Soak several cotton balls thoroughly in the sugary borax solution until saturated.
  4. Place the soaked cotton balls in a shallow container or lid that ants can access easily. Spread them out in the container.
  5. Place the container near areas where you see ant trails or activity. Ants will be attracted to the sugar solution.
  6. Monitor the bait stations and replenish them with new soaked cotton balls every few days as they dry out.
